Chunghwa Telecom Unveils Five-Year Update Plan for NT$129 Bln

Chunghwa Telecom, a leading Taiwan-based telecom, announced on January 4 that it plans to update its fixed-line and mobile networks during next five years for NT$129 billion (US$4.0 billion; US$1 = NT$32.6), of which NT$61 billion (US$1.9 million) will be spent on improving its fiber-optic networks. The networks are expected to deliver data transmission services at 100 megabits per second, up from the current 80 megabits per second. Furthermore, the company stated that the number of its optical fiber subscribers is projected to reach 500,000 by 2007 and hit 2.4 million by 2010.
